I don't get why do the old FF fans have to fall all in the same category. I've been playing FF since FF II for the NES, and my favourite FF is and will always be FF VI, because I personally think it was the epitome of the whole saga. That doesn't mean that i've got any complains for the afterwards FF's, I liked a lot all the changes in direction that each subsequent game have introduced.

FF VII, FFVIII and FF XII are always mentioned as the lack of quality of FF games after FF VI, although i don't see why, they both have done something better than FF VI did, even if FF VI is the best game as a whole. FF VII had the best magic system in the entire series, i really enjoyed the materia system over the the esper magic learing; FF VIII introduced Triple Triad, the best mini game in a FF ever, and FF XII had the best combat system, if you didn't limit yourself to the gambit system, i mean, you could actually pull off so many different strategies in real time against bosses, which was an evolution of the old "be prepared, big bad-ass boss is coming"
