I played all day yesterday and out of all of the competitive matches I played, idk 50 or so, I played in only 4 of the "gimmicky" matches. It's rarely been an option and when it is most people tend to vote against it unlike me who actually wants to play them.
Also, they don't spawn you in your enemys base just to do it. They do it when the enemy has overrun your base so that they can't spawn kill you. When one team takes control of an enemy spawn point, the spawn points switch. It's to KEEP from having enemies behind you and out of all of the times I've played I've spawn with an enemy next to me only once and he was actually outside a door next to me, not in the same room. So I would say it works pretty damn well.
