It's an interesting case as VC was not in the least bit hyped and had a pitiful advertising budget. It got where it is now via word of mouth because it's a quality product.

In Japan at least BD was hyped by MS like crazy. It had a massive PR campaign on the same scale as the big Square Enix games, and was the next big thing from Sakaguchi. MS thoroughly intended it to be the 360's equivalent to Dragon Quest.
