They were selling GameCube's at a profit for $199. I highly doubt they weren't making $50+ profit on each Wii sold at launch (and your information in the OP suggests that was the case), and doubt they couldn't afford to drop the price if need be.
Hell, initial rumors suggested the Wii would be priced $99-149, and the $249 price point was only announced AFTER MS and Sony announced their $399+ price tags, probably because Nintendo knew they could get away with a higher price after that.
