I think it's more that he did look for a distributor and they weren't giving him enough money... so he refused the deal, and claimed this to kick up controversy and hopefully add on some money.
I mean... lets be honest here it's not that everybody said "no way... no matter what!"
It's just that they didn't pay him what he wanted to be paid and he turned down their offers.
