And you can see the results. I can't say what Konami will do, but if they're hiring Murayama, it's a step in the right direction. It won't be marketed to another audience, it'll follow the line of the main seires. Which is what I, at least, want. And it's what ensures the most the quality of the game. So with Murayama, you'll still have a very niche title that no one will buy but that will most likely be a masterpiece |
No offense, but the same people who worked on Suikoden IV and V were the people who worked on Suikoden Tactics/Rhapsodia and Tierkreis. There has been basically 2 teams working on the Suikoden series ever since Murayama left. And in interviews (some even on IGN before the release of Suikoden IV), they explained that they were trying to take Suikoden in a 'new direction'.
The low sales for all the Suikoden games following Suikoden II and III are most likely not the fact that its on X system or because they didn't have good marketing. Suikoden was always a low budget RPG with bad marketing and the DS is the most popular system in Japan right now. The biggest trend for why the games stopped selling well is probably just because they stopped appearing like Suikoden games. And the #1 rule is, don't alienate your fans.
That's why I stopped caring about the series I once loved. And I mean, even when the people making the games are saying stuff like 'we're trying to take the series in a new direction...' That's not a good sign. Especially when Suikoden IV and V feels like it has no connection to the previous games aside from the fact that it has 108 characters and a couple character cameos. In all hignsight, you could really take the last 4 Suikoden games out of the timeline and make a new game called 'Suikoden Redux' following the storyline after either Suikoden I or Suikoden III and you wouldn't have missed anything (aside from a few references to Sindar and like 5 characters).
