As a original Guitar Hero fan, I can say that Harmonix is the clue in this situation. I mean, GH 1 and 2 were great, but then Harmonix was fired and saw their name title become part of Activision. Then GH3 lost the feeling and It wasn't fun anymore
So, they moved to EA and created Rock Band. And the feeling came back as one of the greatest experiencies in the current gen. Maybe the best offline multiplayer of the generation, as it is fun as hell. Moreover, they have the best music line-up and delivers new DLC each week with variety and quality and quantity.
