I think the reason many people on VGC insist on not using it as a sales indicator is because as an entirely online retailer, its sales data does not necessarily reflect the sales of more conventional retailers, which are still the primary force behind video game sales. I think the sales charts also refresh quite frequently, so there are huge fluctuations all the time that might be caused by small factors like weekend deals.
At least, this is what I get from threads on here relating to Amazon, so I could be wrong.
