I thought of every possible conceivable way that it could be a positive. As a psych major with both real life and college experience in marketing and business, I've argued many points in these forums about marketing.

The only things I can think of is:
a) price drop was last week.
b) madden was released more than two weeks ago

Other than that, having more commercials is better than less, in most cases. This would be one of those cases. On top of that, it was a football season opener, a lot of people watch the games together, thereby expanding the audience dramatically, and the commercial was for a football game, and it i the beginning of the season.
Ouch.

The only real negative I can see is that the return on those commercials might not have been cost effective. Selling 100k copies will net about 700k$ from software fees. Do they make money on hardware now? If not, it could be a bigger loss. Also, traditionally, ps3 sells more sports games than 360 does.

EDIT: well I guess not Madden, though. traditionally 360 has sold more than ps3.
