As many have said before, they will just go for upgrading what they have now and not a completely different chipset. Having said that, I still think they will end up with the most powerful system in the end. The Cell is really incredible when used properly. Seeing a game rendered using an upgraded version, as well as whatever advanced GPU they go with, would probably make my eyes explode. Especially when you look at it's capability to make calculations on the fly. The Folding@Home app already shows an example of this. Now just think of the complex physics calculation or advanced A.I. an upgraded Cell could pull off. Considering the costs of Blu-ray, making Cells, and larger HDD's will have gone down incredibly by then, they should be able to pull it off rather cheaply. I would imagine $400 would be the max asking price. Next gen also poses a different environment for MS and Nintendo. Blu-ray will definitely be the norm by then, or at least hold a majority market share, so what will they do? No one will want outdated DVD tech. Imagine how small your games would be on one disk, with all the new improved graphics. Maybe an hour or two. I see them having t hree options... 1. Spend millions upon millions coming up with their own format, which they can't make profit off of with movies or music, only slightly with games. 2. Settle for slightly improved hardware over this gen, so as not to need as much space. Now that may have worked for Nintendo this gen, but I seriously don't see it working for them or MS next gen. And to those of you who think we have not much more to go in terms of graphics, I say you're wrong. When we can pop in a game and think it's a Pixar movie, then we have nowhere to go. Granted Ratchet and Clank comes close, but not close enough. Definitely need to completely do away with these pixelated shadows and draw distances. 3. Or go with Blu-ray. But if they do that, Sony profits no matter which system you buy. Kinda devilish if you ask me. LOL. Well that's my two cents. |
In Terms of what MS and Ninty will do. Well Im not to sure what MS has planned but I have a strong feeling that Nintendo will be sticking with their own variation of DVD-9's. I'm not sure what their using but they'll probably op for DVD-9's and release a system as powerful as the current 360.
Microsoft I see them trying to make a push for DD but they're probably waiting to see how the reception is for the PSPGO to have some form of idea where consumers stand on DD vs Physical media. OR MS could just make their own version of HD-DVD call it something else and they avoided Sony all together.
But Yes no one of the big 3 will even think about breaking the $400.00 barrier again, since it really killed the top dog of the last two gens
