On the issue of why gaming isn't as good now as it was back then, well back then 3d gaming was new and fresh, today its old and stale, back then the barriers to gaming entry were much lower, you didn't need 10 million dollar budgets for a game, smaller companies were able to produce games, and most companies were not the massive corporate behemoths that they are today, customers were still respected
