1: Ps2- it excelled in every category. Even to this day it can outsell next gen systems on occasion and still houses exclusive hits.
2: SNES. The SNES perfected what the NES started. The 16 bit gaming era was revolutionized by this console.
3: Ps1. When nintendo struck down the agreement with Sony to make CD based technology for the SNES, Sony became more powerful than anyone could have imagined. Not only was it the first system to ever reach 100m systems sold- it did it all with style. The ps1 gave us hits like FFVII and gran turismo.
4. Xbox. Though it lived in the shadow of the ps2- it did lay the groundwork for something big. Xbox live transformed the newcomer into a powerhouse; all consoles now have some version of this ground breaking feature.
5. DS (if handhelds count). What can be said that isn't already known? The DS uses two screens, it's backwards compatible, it has a microphone, stellar graphics, and houses some of the best selling and recognized games this generation. With games being at roughly $30 USD, it's hard to pass up such an offer.
