When the cost of making a new FF game is higher than the profit.
Really, the FF games have been going downhill sales wise since FF7, while the costs have been increasing. Squenix needs to pull out another FF7, a massive game that brings in a bunch of casual gamers who wouldn't normally pick up a JRPG.
I have a hunch that FF13 is going to have a hard time making back it's development costs, simply because it's been in development forever and uses the utter top of the line graphics on a relatively small install base. Remember, FF12 sold only 5 million on an install base of around 100 million.
And then after 13 you have 14, which is an MMO. Almost all MMOs fail horribly. That's just how it goes. It's a testament to how much the fans love Squenix that FF11 did reasonably well. Squenix needs to learn from their mistakes and make a truly top of the line MMO if they want to make any money off it.
Wii has more 20 million sellers than PS3 has 5 million sellers.
