The problem is that Sonic went from a prestige game to a commercial product. He's never going to retrieve that particular magic he had. You can see the difference even in the jump from Sonic Adventure 2 to Sonic Heroes (especially in showing that the loss of magic had nothing to do with the transition to 3D)

 

Sonic can never return to his former glory, because that's tied to him being a console mascot. He can, however, find a new path beyond the reckless whoring that SEGA is now subjecting him to (not that they're actually bad games, except for Sonic Chronicles & Sonic 06, but it's about the attitude with which they use Sonic, the same way Activision uses Guitar Hero)
