I thought the first season of Lost was brilliant but I feel it went down hill a little in the latter seasons. I would recommend watching it though as it's still better than most other programs.
My list would have to be:
1. The Wire (amazing show that I really can't recommend enough)
2. Battlestar Galactica (the reboot series)
3. Deep Space 9
4. Babylon 5
5. Rome
