If your tastes are anything remotely similar to mine, you'll find that the game pretty much never picks up. Most of the characters are really lame, and like you said, there is really bad writing and dialogue. The voice acting gets worse when the dialogue becomes more ''emotional'', and there is a certain scene that is arguably the corniest cutscene ever produced. The inablility to skip cutscenes will really become a detriment as you progress through the game.
Luckily the gameplay and battle system are, in my opinion, really good, so you might find it worth your while to keep on truckin' through the game.
