The reason is Nintendo didn't really care about online that way much. They aren't trying to compete with their competitors they want people to get out of the living room go out and make friends via the console(why it's called a friend code). Their console is all about real life social experience and having a system similar to XBL would take away the focus from that. If sales are any indication which people around here tend to take as the golden mean they are right. Buy an HD console if that is one of your gaming values.
