Well, ultimately it's the developers that make games great. Owning the developers means you'll always have the means to make more great titles.
If you own an IP but not the developer, then the day may come where the developer breaks relations with you, and you're kinda stuck with no team to make a sequel, or at least not the same team that made the first game great (look at Ninja Theory and Heavenly Sword - Sony owning the IP doesn't make it anymore likely that we'll get a sequel =/).
And look at Naughty Dog. Would it have been better if Sony owned the Crash IP? Or owned Naughty Dog? If they just owned Crash, we wouldn't be seeing a robust, internal Naughty Dog team pumping out games like Uncharted.
