They always had Square Enix, so they never really bothered after the Legend of Dragoon. However, now that they don't have 90% of Square games exclusive to their consoles, I'm sure they're looking to expand, much like how they tackled the FPS genre at the end of last year with the purchase of Zipper Interactive and Guerrilla Games.

Of course, they still have a strong relationship with Level 5, and I'm loving their newly formed relationship with From Software. I do expect them to start working on an RPG internally at some point, even if it means buying a developer to make it so.

Even so, sony should have a first party developer for every major genre i think, considering 3rd party exclusives are becoming a thing of the past and i think they'll continue to dwindle over time.

i like the way WKC looks, and demon souls i have them both pre ordered. but i want to see something insane form a first party team

I'm sure they're working on it. Sony has always tried to improve their first parties in any areas where they may be weak.  Last gen they tackled shooters after stiff competition from MS, and now they actually have a few too many shooters in development, which is why Eight Days was canceled.  They ended up overcompensating.  Now that they've lost the support of Square, JRPGs are the next logical ste;.

You have to figure, they've already got Gran Turismo at the forefront of the racing sim genre, God of War headlining hack n' slash, Killzone 2 up there with some of the best shooters, MAG pushing limits on player counts, Uncharted making Tomb Raider look bad, Wipeout providing the *only* decent competition for F-Zero, MotorStorm up there with the best off-road racers, and the Ico titles standing out from other adventure titles.  And now SOE is bringing MMOs and other goods to the ps3.

They've got most genres covered with some excellent titles, with the exception of platformers (seeing as Naughty Dog has abandoned the genre for now  - unless you count Media Molecule, then you have a good platform with excellent multiplayer), Mario Kart-esque arcade racers, and all manner of JRPGs.

Throw second parties into the mix, and you get most of these genres covered, but their second party titles generally aren't up to the same standard as their internally developed stuff, with the exception of LittleBigPlanet and Ratchet & Clank.
