ok, here's the scoop, the article only says there's no "co-op offline multiplayer" which means there still is multiplayer quickplay (like versus) just no "co-op" or joint effort if you will.
I do apologize, as I read this like it meant there is no offline multiplayer, when there clearly is...
so in summary:
if you want to play together to achieve combine score play co-op career mode.
if you want to play versus select the multiplayer on the menu.
