I doubt the current shape of the 360 cabinet had much to do with the heat issues... my understanding is that it was due to many factors including insufficient fan strength, motherboard warping due to heat, insufficient heat sink capacity, etc.
But I do agree with you that designing a console to look like this would lead to some very interesting thermal challenges...
