Whip out the guide for 5 seconds, do the thing, and put the guide away again. Then once I've finished the game I can look through the guide to see what I missed.

Some games, though, are really annoying and anal about having you collect things, and there are things that would kinda screw you over if you missed them. If I can tell it's going to be that kind of game, I'll use a guide all the way through the game. Or if it's a game like Gran Turismo, a guide can be helpful to let you know what prizes you get from completing each event, so you know which ones are more worth your time. In these cases I don't feel like using a guide is "cheating" because winning races is completely up to your driving skill.
