Flopped? Are you kidding me?
I am too lazy to look up the actual numbers, but you do know that FFXI still has a TON of monthly subscribers (all paying 13(?)USD a month +1 dollar for every mule or additional character), right? And it has been around for 6 years now. And it has milked it's customer base numerous times with expansion packs.
Your average FF game makes a pile of money out of the gate, but 3 years later the cheques ain't comin in. I GUARANTEE you that if you look at the profits SE has made off FFXI, they simply dwarf any other FF game by comparison.
