But surely PS3 has ALWAYS sold more than the 360 Elite, and it will continue to be so. Elite sales will go up of course once the Pro disappears completely (pro at $50 cheaper is surely still a better deal than Elite??? or is the extra HDD space and headset worth the $50), but it will still sell less than the PS3. If 360 WW sales is more than PS3 that will almost certainly be due to Arcade sales, except perhaps if 360 beats PS3 in a given week/month by more than about 20%.
So on a head to head sales basis PS3 vs. 360 Elite the PS3 will win every week except for the weeks of significant 360 software releases.
If MS wants to accelerate away from PS3 sales then Elite will need a price cut next year some time. I don't see Sony cutting Slim next year, perhaps in 2011 it will get $50 shaved off, then $50 the year after, if it's still selling. By the end of the fabled 10YP it'll be $99 ($189 here) like the PS2 is now.
