Here's where I think it is controversial. Final Fantasy VI and Chrono Trigger played a major part in the SNES being able to come back against Genesis in the 16-bit wars.
If Final Fantasy VII had come to the N64 in the 32 bit era instead of the PS1, Nintendo would have won that era handily and Sony would have lost. No question about it. Final Fantasy VII and Square's games made the PS1 the victor in the 32 bit era.
Final Fantasy X, XII, and Kingdom Hearts likewise contributed heavily to the success of PS2 in the 6th gen. There were other big games like GTA that appeared on the scene but there is no way that PS2 could have been as succesful as it was without the Square and Square Enix support.
In this gen, PS3 fans thought they would get the same support. And the truth is Sony fans haven't been getting the same kind of exclusive support from Square as in past gens. If FFXIII had made it out as a Sony exclusive worldwide Christmas 2008, there can be little doubt that the PS3 would have ruled Christmas 2008 instead of coming in third. And if Versus was coming out this year as another PS3 exclusive there would be a strong chance of PS3 ruling this year's holiday season.
However, with FFXIII coming to 360 as well it took away a lot of success that would have been coming to the PS3 this year and last year. See by putting FFXIII on 360, Square has managed to take away something that really could have put PS3 over the top.
The same thing did happen to Nintendo in the 32 bit era too though (and I believe the Nintendo resurgence started with Square games started coming to the GBA).
So far, I don't think Japanese gamers have demonstrated that they are very fond of the 360. And this contributes to the controversy. Having a leading Japanese games studio that has frequently been ranked with Nintendo over the years as the favorite Japanese games studio by many people putting their games on a console that most Japanese people and fans of Japanese games seem to actually loathe.
I'm not saying if it's right or wrong I'm just saying where I see the controversy coming from.
My biggest personal problem is I don't want to miss out on Versus, and I don't have a 360 or PS3 right now. I know which one I would pick if I knew Versus was going to be multi-plat.
