I remember this when I was a kid. I think it may have been when Bane first popped up. I have these comics somewhere.

He never got his own revenge on Bane either.

He got his revenge in Detective Comics #700!  I started buying comics during the Knightfall (and Death of Superman) storyline, and I remember the rematch being a big deal.
