I think the troubles between PS3 and 360 stem from different philosophies in gaming. I think PS3 fans have been afraid that the 360 would spell doom for the types of games they prefer mainly Japanese types of games.

The 360 has had quite a few of these types of games though.

Still, Japanese gamers haven't really bought into the 360 that much and most of the Japanese types of games on the console have had pretty poor sales, so the fear remains that if you're the type of gamer that has always prefered Japanese types of games (cinematic jrpgs, etc) to the Western types of games that are much more successful on 360 -- fps games, western corridor type rpgs where you have more control over the stories in games but possibly at the expense of more cohesive stories in the games, then the 360's success could take away from Japanese types of games
