XBox 360 is a nice console and if it is affordable there is no reason to ignore it. I have PS3 and XBox 360 since early 2007 and have a good expirience I'd like to share.
From one hand, the 360 has advantages over PS3. First of all there is no need to install games (demos, game installs), while PS3 needs it. XBox 360 will have Forza 3 and Alan Wake soon.
But, from other hand, XBox 360 needs some additional expenses. First of all it is Gold XBL Membership. Many shops offer the console with 12+1 months free, so you have to find and buy Elite with it. The 360 "was created with online play in mind" so there is no need to miss it. It is cheaper. Secondly, you'd better buy a charging station with a couple of rechargable batteries with it. Trust me - it is worth of it.
If you are a PS3 fan and have your "fatty black one" for a long time, be ready to face problems you didn't ever expect. First of all - it is faulty quality of console. I have already replaced 3 XBox 360 since 2007. First one was faulty initialy and hang up constanly after 15 mins of play, the sencond was RRoDed and third had E error with falty HDD. My last one works fine from late 2008 but I switch it on once in a month.
If you have an older model of your receiver (without hdmi) and expect to put sound thru it via TOSlink cable, you'll have to buy a special cable. The XBox 360 doesn't let to use ordinary HDMI and TOSlink cables simultaneously.
if you have an HDMIed receiver it will work fine. But never use its upscaling features if it has ones. I used Harman Kardon receiver with Faroudja upscaling chip all my attepts to upscale any 720p game to 1080p failed with blinking screens of my TVset.
From the lineup of games I'd highly recomend you Gears of War series! I'm sure you are going to be hypnotized with its visuals and gameplay... Sorry, my list of masterpieces of XBox 360 ends here. All other games depends on your own preferences. It has a good line up of exclusives, but most of good games can be found on PS3 too.
