I wish I could still find the it but about a year after the launch of the XBox and Gamecube there was an article that talked about the demographics of various gaming systems; at the time the Gameboy Advance (followed closely by the Gameboy) had the largest percentage of adult gamers as compared to any other system.  The interesting thing about the Gamecube was that it had more adult gamers (as a percentage) than either the XBox or PS2 but had the smallest (by a long shot) percentage of teenage and young adult (up to 21) gamers.

I have noticed that there are a lot of gamers over a certain age (I would say somewhere between 25 and 30 currently) who were active gamers and old enough when the Playstation came around that the 'kiddie' thing never really bothered them.
