I bought a new NES player for $10 at the flea market. It's about the same height and width of a cartridge and a little more than twice as thick. It actually works. It came with two cheap controllers (but they have a built in turbo function). That was cheaper than buying a new 72-pin connector and taking apart my NES Console. I still have 50+ cartridges and I still play them.
I bought a second SNES console a couple years ago (first one was water damaged in a plumbing catastrophe). It was $40 (reconditioned) with two controllers BNIB plus a game. I have tons of games and still play them.
I'm considering buying a PS2 Slim this christmas.
