If Microsoft introduces the next box before 2012, then Sony will be very late to the show, probably more than just a year later this time.
Even late 2011 will have devs finding new advantages/ways of working with the cell/ blu ray.

Microsofts next console will have a blu-ray like storage medium, or tarabit hard drives which will finally allow multiplat developers to fill 50gb blu ray discs/nextbox's storage.

Microsofts next console will have better graphics, but the PS3 will get ports at the highest PS3 graphical capabilities possible. Unless there is a new hook to buy a new console, graphics will not warrant a change in consoles for me.

Dev costs are already through the roof , and to go even higher for another generation, then each console will see ~10 games a year because no devs will be able to afford the development.

It sounds strange, but I think Sony should continue to come out with iterations of versions of the PS3 even when the nextbox launches.

have another PS3 iteration that has way more memory and have all future PS3 games automatically optimize themselves for whatever version of the PS3 one is playing on.

The "Playstation 3 advance" could launch in 2012, immediately alongside the launch of the nextbox. Then the PS4 could launch 2 years later or... gasp, skip a gen!

I bet that this time around both Sony and Microsoft are waiting for the other to launch first.
