yes, if you obey rome and accept the emperor as god(dominus et deus, 96) everything was fine. but christianity only becomes tolerant gradually and that is really slow. the inquisition, the crusades, slavery was accepted among cristians too(american civil war, a war upon a nation founded by cristianity) ku kux klan, sexual abuse. protestanism often washes it hands by every church being a separate entity, but the level of tolerance is way lower in protestanism that catolicism.
