If by mid-range you mean anything in the range of a HD4890/GTX275 with a 130watt CPU, it's still within the safety margin assuming the PSU being used is a high quality one.

But if you're buying a new PSU, I don't see much reason to go lower than 600watts for a dedicated gaming machine that will presumably be overclocked.

Corsair, Enermax, OCZ, PC Power and Cooling, Zalman, Silverstone, Seasonic and generally anything that is 80 Plus certified.
