I see what you mean. I don't think FF characters ever has been designed to look "typical", neither males nor females. Maybe because they're meant to be "fantasies" 
. For me, Final Fantasy has always been about non-typical design. And I'm not just talking about characters but FF as a whole.
About the characters, sexy girls sell...and I don't mind as long as they're not making them Soul Calibur sexy. That I wouldn't like. It would be nice to see some "typical" girls from time to time though.
To find series with more typical characters you have to play Lunar or Suikoden or something like that.
