If the signal strength is good then the majority of the time you won't notice any difference. I play 2 player online games regularly with a friend and we were getting occasional lag and disconnection issues until he switched to using an ethernet cable (I was already using one) and since then we've had no problems. I think it's always best to use ethernet where it's practical to do so.
