When I first saw Heavenly Sword gameplay I could have Sworn the game was made by Santa Monica. So I don't see why they couldn't take over the franchise. Both games are sword and sandal Hack'n'Slash so they occupy the same niche. And once GoW III is done Santa Monica's gotta move on. Still I imagine a studio like SM would want to explore it's own creative landscape and not take over someone else's leavings.
Interesting the analogy to Insomniac making KZ2: they did do Resistance, another quality FPS.
