The download is to reduce disk usage, as in less heat, less noise, faster load (in theory, cause I recall hearing some games like Halo increase in load time) and of course, prevents disc scratching. It does nothing else, you still need the disk to play. (hence why every PS3 fanboy talking about huge instals for MSG or FFXIII sound so ridicule to 360 users...)
It's recommended if you're gonna spend hours on end on one game (like RPGs), but really not essensial.
