I feel that since the 360 has more consoles sold, more "firends" are bound to have one, i.e more people will be better introduced to the 360 beforhand and therefor will have the 360 in mind when they finally enter the game store in pursuit of a console.
But i see what you're saying. If one were to do a clinical comparisson between the two. If someone were to buy his or her first console with no outside forces telling you what to buy, i'd say the consumer would probably go PS3 8/10 times. Just look at all the mag and site reviews pre-PS3 launch. Stuff, T3, M3, PCGamer, Newspapers, Engadget, Gizmodo etc.. most had the PS3 at 5 stars, while 360 was a 4 star. But look at were the 360 is now. Marketing and outside preasure goes along way.
