Like you said, it's 100% dependent upon how many consoles SCE produced and shipped.
You can't sell a million consoles if you only have 500k on hand. It's the same reason why the more outrageous Wii sales predictions were just that. As in accounting for units sold that weren't even projected to be shipped because they just weren't being produced at a great enough rate.
Best case scenario: initial PS3 production run sells out. Whatever that shipped number is = number of consoles sold. Doesn't get much more simple than that.
On the plus side for SCE, the early fall debut means more time to ramp up production to meet holiday demand, giving a much better indicator of just how much demand there is for a $299 PS3. Barring a complete sell out scenario (which seems unlikely), everyone should be able to reasonbly tell how much of a game changer it was or wasn't.
