I have my PS2 (original version, from 2002) and PS3 standing side by side in my entertainment center and they're both in vertical positions.
While the PS3 stands strong on its own, there was a stand on sale for the PS2 as well, but I never bought it and my console never fell. Could it be a similar thing for the PS3 Slim?
