I personally would be happier having the stand so i know that the console would not have the chance of going anywhere if something did happen anyway!
I used to have my PS3 Vertical all the time but it is always Horizontal now, and since i have the original (obviously lol) i won't need the stand! Although i am tempted to get a slim for some reason... Just a fan of new gadgets i suppose lol
