A President and the government in general are not meant to have any part in controlling corporations either private or public. That's a socialistic society.
We were in a great economic state until 2008, the last year of his Presidency. There isn't much he could have done at that point. There is nothing really that a government can do to bring the nation out of recession. The only thing that worked in the past was a world war. We have to rely on ourselves to create new products, businesses, jobs, etc.
The economy runs in cycles of rise and decline. This is about the second or 3rd worst decline we have had, but it is still a rather normal part of the economy.
