Option 1: You die

Option 2: You take down, and arrest the guy

Option 3: You convince the hold up guy to go away, and guess what, you meet him and his daughter at some point, perhaps with a different character, and he can save your life/help you.

Option 4: all your characters do retarded stuff and die

thats probably the first thing im going to do when i get this.

That's why I think that sometimes set storylines could be better than open ones. If your character dies, but without resolving whatever problem they had or what not, it's just anti climatic. If the character dies, after they finally realize something, go through their final transformation, repeat a mistake, etc, then it's part of the story.
