PS3 is positioned as a game system and movie player now, not a computer for doing work. One less point to mess the system up with.

I agree HEAVILY with this. So now people won't buy a PS3 just for that? Sounds more to me like an excuse NOT to buy the system rather than a logical reason. To each his own, but the PS3 is more affordable now which is better for the consumer.

I don't know what kinds of homebrew applications exist for the PS3 (on the Wii there are some quite cool ones, such as WiiQuake).
As far as I'm concerned, the point of installing Linux was to make a few experiments with development on the Cell.
