My evidence is an Insomniac employee stating very clearly that the PS2 Ratchet and Clank games sold over 13 million copies combined. Even if he's including copies still on the shelves (i.e.; shipped instead of sold), VG Chartz' numbers just don't add up.
You've got 7.5 million listed between the first three games and there are only Japanese numbers available here for the fourth PS2 game. If we watch the downward trend of the existing figures and factor in how much worse the fourth game was compared to the first three we can be generous and say that Deadlocked would be listed at 2 million here on VG Chartz, leaving us at 9.5 million to Insomniac's 13 million. A difference of 3.5 million seems pretty substantial to me. Edit: Looking back at my post, it seems I exaggerated a bit by claiming "upwards of 1 million per title"... the figures seem to be off by an average of 875k per title. |
Link? Also, are you sure they really said PS2 and it wasn't overall? |
Brian Allegier states, very clearly on two separate occasions, that the PS2 titles sold 13 million combined in this 'podcast' (can something with video be called a podcast?) with "Mercury News gaming writers Dean Takahashi and Mike Antonucci" at this link: http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/2007/10/video_dean_and_nooch_talk_about_ratchet_and_clank_with_sonys_brian_allegier.html
On this gametrailers clip, a rep also states that the Ratchet and Clank games have sold 13 million copies, though he doesn't specify PS2-only (though as far as I can tell, sales of Ratchet and Clank: Size Matters have not been that impressive so I'm not sure how much of a difference they would make even if they were included): http://www.gametrailers.com/player/25173.html
So, there's two sources.
