More niche with higher quality titles. FFVII started the flash over substance JRPG. The FF series never really recovered from it.

More niche, equals less sales , equals less motivation to make as good a game. Sure there are niche games that are of very high quality, but they are few and far between. I'm Not implying that sales = quality. Quality does drive sales though. And as for flash over substance that's entirely subjective. But of course you notice the Nintendo fans saying FFVI is better, and Sony fans saying FFVII is better. Such is life.

not true, more niche = more concentration on that niche.  Less sales does not mean less motivation to make a good game, what do you think the developers are running on commission or something?  It means lower budget, but they will focus on what the people in that niche are looking for, not the new RPG crowd that just bought FF7 because the graphics were top notch.

Well I suppose it works both ways. And I just recently bought FF7. For the graphics obviously. A game that sells well doesn't mean it's just because it's popular. Sure it can help. And companies that have high selling franchises can also make an amazing game, More sales doesn't mean less care taken by developer.
