You've been taken in by the marketing. 4870s with 512MB that perform identically in resolutions that most people use are going for under half that price. Above 512MB video memory makes almost no difference, and 1GB only makes sense on very high resolutions of 1920x1200 and above.

What matters more is internal architecture, which can only be determined by benchmarks. The 4870 is a great deal - at $120.

this build would cost me about 1550$ Can (1400$ US) with vista 64-bit
