Personally, I'd play the games in order of their releases: MGS1, MGS2, MGS3 and MGS4 (if you ever want to replay it one day).
If you can get Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence for PS2, you have a second disc with Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, the first two games that were released on MSX. They're fun as well, and they explain what Outer Haven is really supposed to be a bit more.

Why is Bionic Commando Rearmed 2 getting so much hate? We finally get a real game and they're not even satisfied... I'm starting to hate the gaming community so f****** much...
