Wow! Maybe its a network effect with people being dragged into games with their friends with invites etc? I think the invites are the key incentive for people to buy those online downloads as they will be able to jump straight into a multiplayer game with their friends.
In short:
Game invites = increase in play time due to peer effect.
Game invites + online gaming = epic win.
