This here is what matters Stof.
The word gay meant something before it meant being homosexual, and it has meant something since meaning homosexual.
So not only do most people who use the word gay not mean to slander gays, they are NOT slandering gays. The word itself is completely acceptable as a simile for "stupid, annoying or silly." But that does not for a moment mean that homosexuality is a simile for "stupid, annoying or silly."
